Modern Poems For Wedding Ceremonies

Why you should consider modern poems for your ceremony

Poems are known to be a traditional element to wedding ceremonies, but it can be difficult to find one that really reflects you or that you feel strongly enough about to include it in your ceremony.

Many of the worlds most famous and well-known poets and poems were written decades, if not centuries ago. They may still be beautiful and the meaning behind them timeless, but the language and content do not always resonate with or reflect modern day couples.

I will write a blog in the future about the most popular and famous poems and readings used for wedding ceremonies, but after receiving many inquiries this year from couples who have chosen not to include poetry into their ceremony scripts, I am keen to share these gems with you today.

Young poets are becoming very popular now, being given the genre and branding of "Instapoets", they famously use Instagram, Twitter, and other social networks to share their poetry with the world.

Tyler Knott Gregson  (My personal favourite)

It honestly came as a surprise to me how much I have loved reading poetry recently. Before reading Tyler's book 'chasers of the light' I didn't have any strong opinions on the subject, but it has changed me! I think I might have even developed an addiction.

Click on the image below to buy this book on Amazon. I HIGHLY recommend you do. You won't regret it.

Every couple of pages I found paragraphs that made me smile and immediately send to my boyfriend, and I admit that I even shed a tear a couple of times. I can guarantee that you will find ones that you think were written especially for you, so don't rush through them, read them slowly and enjoy.

Below are just a couple of poems from this book that I think would be wonderful as readings during a wedding ceremony (there are plenty more but I don't want to ruin the book for you!), either read out by your Celebrant, or read by you and your partner to each other.

I Love You,
in ways
you’ve never been
for reasons you’ve never been
for longer than you think you
and with more
than you will ever know existed
— Chasers of the light - Tyler Knott Gregson
I want kisses without questions marks
and if at some point one lingers
I want the passion we share
to makes those marks stand at attention,
straighten their backs
and transform themselves back
into the exclamation marks
that used to and always should
lock themselves to our lips.
— Chasers of the light - Tyler Knott Gregson

Ava is another Instapoet who has 3 books out - 'you are safe here', 'for A', and 'this is how you know i want you'. I love this title.

how beautiful you are
for never giving up on yourself,
for just waking up
and choosing to get out of bed.

seeing you own your life
and be so willing to face it
over and over again
is so powerful,
you make me believe
anything is possible.

you make me believe
in heroes again.
— pep talk 47 - AVA
i couldn’t tell you how many
stars are in the night sky,
but i know that my love for you
evenly crowned from beginning to end
is more than the entire whole
of the black universe.

i know that i will always love you in this way.

wholly and nothing less.
— feeling 132 - AVA

Lang Leav

Lang Leav is a talented best-selling author of both novels and poetry.

I know love, because I am in love. Because of how
long I’ve loved. Because of the man I love.

Love used to be a beautiful mirage, a moonbeam on
the water I tried to cup in my hands. Now it is a
grand oak tree, tried and rested, roots driving deep
down into the earth. I have a love that takes me
across oceans. A love that tells me I am home, no
mater where in the world I am.
— I Know Love - Lang Leav
Love looks pretty on you. It makes you soft, tender, proud.
Makes you sit up and take notice. Gives you a home to set
down your things.

What a blessing it is, to have dancing and music and poetry.
What a gift it is, to look at someone and say,

I’m so happy to have found you - at last, at last, at long, long
last - you’re here.
— At Last - Lang Leav

I am leaving you with a part of one of my favourite poems. It is unlike the ones above, but when I first read it, months and months ago, I immediately saved it and sent it to my boyfriend - because it sounds so much like us! It has a child-like narrative and it isn't super deep, but it is fun, silly and relatable and it always makes me smile.

Even if the poems here in this blog post don't do it for you, I do encourage you to keep looking, because you when you find the one/s that make you immediately think - 'How did this person write exactly how I feel?!' it will feel as if someone has just handed you a lovely personalised gift.

When the right one comes along, regardless of whether it is something beautiful, funny, straight-to-the-point, deep, thought provoking or tear jerking - if it makes you smile, laugh, cry or fall in love again - it is a great option for your wedding ceremony, as it enhances the sense of your personalities into the script - which is of course incredibly important on a day which is about you both.

I like you and I know why.
I like you because you are a good person to like.
I like you because when I tell you something special, you know it’s special
And you remember it a long, long time.
You say, Remember when you told me something special
And both of us remember

When I think something is important
you think it’s important too
We have good ideas
When I say something funny, you laugh
I think I’m funny and you think I’m funny too
I like you because you know where I’m ticklish
And you don’t tickle me there except just a little tiny bit sometimes
But if you do, then I know where to tickle you too
You know how to be silly
That’s why I like you
Boy are you ever silly
I never met anybody sillier than me till I met you
I like you because you know when it’s time to stop being silly
Maybe day after tomorrow
Maybe never
Too late, it’s a quarter past silly
Sometimes we don’t say a word
We snurkle under fences
We spy secret places
If I am a goofus on the roofus hollering my head off
You are one too
If I pretend I am drowning, you pretend you are saving me
If I am getting ready to pop a paper bag,
then you are getting ready to jump
That’s because you really like me
You really like me, don’t you
And I really like you back
— "I Like You" by Sandol Staddard Warburg
