A naming ceremony is most commonly held to celebrate the arrival of a new baby, and to officially introduce them to your friends and family.

However, they can be thrown for a person of any age, for any number of reasons, from celebrating a baby, to welcoming step children or adopted children into your family to honouring and celebrating a change of name or a rite of passage.

It is a wonderful chance for you to celebrate and make vows to the child or person at the focus, and an opportunity for your friends and family to witness your commitments, and to make their own if you wish.

You can also assign the non-religious equivalent to Godparents, who will sign a certificate and make their dedications to your child. You can choose to call their role whatever you want, depending on what feels right for you - ‘Life Mentors’, ‘Guide Parents’, ‘Role Models’, ‘Spiritual Guardian’ are some examples.

Many different symbolic rituals can be added into a naming ceremony - from gift giving, a time capsule, blessings jar, tree planting, hand fasting ceremony, sand or unity candle. You would need to provide any props required foir these rituals, and your celebrant will work closely with you to advise on appropriate materials.
